About La Giraldilla:
La Giraldilla statue is a historic symbol of Havana.
Created in 1634, La Giraldilla is a bronze statue that sits on top of the western watchtower of El Castillo de La Fuerza Real (The Royal Castle). The artist, Gerónimo Martin Pinzón, based the sculpture on the figure of the La Giralda Tower in Seville in Spain.
The sculpture is a weathervane letting ships know the direction of the wind as they approach.
It is believed that La Giraldilla honors Isabel de Bobadilla, Havana’s only female governor, legend has it Isabel would visit this tower every night looking out sea waiting for her husband Hernando de Soto to return from his adventures.
The key has been symbolic of Havana since it’s founding in 1519 and is featured on every historic flag and coat of arms.
The figure became a symbol of Havana and is even featured on the Havana Club rum label.
