ZULTANITE®

Provenance Gems is an official distributor of authentic Zultanite® .

Zultanite®  is a natural single source color changing gemstone. We began working with Zultanite® in 2011 and it has proved to be a remarkable discovery. During this time we have developed a close and personal relationship with Zultanite®, it's homeland and it's collectors.

WHAT IS ZULATNITE®?

Zultanite® is the color changing variety of the mineral diaspore, an aluminum hydroxide discovered in the Ilbir Mountains of Muğla in southwestern Turkey.

Zultanite contains traces of iron, chromium, titanium and manganese. It is generally believed that the manganese is responsible for Zultanite's color change.

Although it is possible that the first samples could have been discovered as early as the 1950's, commercial mining of Zultanite did not begin until 2006.

Zultanite® is named in honor of the 36 Sultans of the Ottoman Empire that ruled Turkey and beyond from 1299 to 1923.

This name pays tribute to Zultanite®'s homeland and differentiates Zultanite® from non-gem quality diaspore mined prior to 2005, this material was often heavily included, poorly cut and not suitable for fine jewelry.

COLOR CHANGE

Color change is a rare optical phenomenon. Color changing gemstones show different colors under different light sources. This would be one color in sunlight and a different color in indoor light.

Zultanite®'s basic colors are kiwi green in sunlight, champagne in indoor lighting and raspberry in firelight.

The truth is Zultanite®'s color shift is not just limited to these basic colors. Zultanite®'s Pleochroism makes different colors appear at different viewing angles and different varieties of light can show a wide variety of colors. Mixed lighting produces spectacular results.

When collecting Zultanite® it is important to know that as a rule, the larger the Zultanite® the more intense the color change.

COLLECTING ZULTANITE®

Zultanite® is still new to market and many jewelry professionals are still yet to see their first Zultanite®. However we live in the information age and Zultanite®'s reputation is growing much faster than it would have a generation ago.

Although Zultanite® is indeed rare there are many factors that make Zultanite® interesting to every gemstone collector.

Zultanite® is treatment free, this fact separates Zultanite from 90%  of all gemstones available anywhere. Sapphires, Rubies, Emeralds and Tanzanites have all had some degree of treatment or color enhancement whether this be simple heat treatment or even artificial dyes or oils.

Zultanite® is Eye-Clean. A valuable gemstone should not have inclusions detract from the gem's beauty, for example, anyone that has purchased a diamond has discussed the diamond's clarity. Unpolished and rough Zultanite is heavily included but the standard for faceted Zultanite® is Eye-Clean and no inclusions should be visible at 20/20 vision. Visibly included material should not be accepted under any circumstances.

When collecting Zultanite® size matters. All faceted Zultanite® is Eye-Clean, treatment free and Zultanite® is only cut in a few select locations worldwide so true quality control for global production is not only possible but a reality. This means size is the only tangible price differential.

The larger the Zultanite® the higher the price per carat.

A large Zultanite® is over 5 carats, this size is considered very rare, the majority weigh less than 2 carats.

TURKEY

Turkey is a fascinating country with a rich history and vibrant culture.

Having said that it is extremely important to exercise caution when shopping for Zultanite® there. Sadly many counterfeit gemstones, simulants and fakes are offered for sale at certain retail locations and the unsuspecting traveller may not have a clue what authentic Zultanite® looks like.

Zultanite® could be the ultimate souvenir of an adventure to Turkey. If you do indeed decide to purchase a Zultanite® it is important to make sure you are dealing with an official authorized retailer of authentic Zultanite®. Any Zultanite® offered for sale is accompanied by the Zultanite® Authenticity Guarantee Card. It is as much a guarantee of authenticity as it is of quality.
