Freedom Tower
We have a workshop in downtown Miami where many of the pieces exhibited on this website are made. As we look out the window, amongst all of the bustling twenty first century high-rises, the Freedom Tower stands out from the crowd.
The Freedom Tower overlooks the Port of Miami, literally across the street from the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat. Built in 1925, the architects took direct inspiration from the La Giralda in Seville for what was to be the headquarters of the newspaper The Miami News.
Many years later In 1962 the Federal Government began to use the Freedom Tower to receive refugees from Cuba linking the building to Miami’s cuban heritage forever more.
Inside the Freedom Tower on the second floor the New World Mural celebrates the birth and growth of modern day Florida. The mural took on tremendous significance for the refugees that would gather around it for the next decade. By 1989 the mural had sadly decayed considerably, a group of local artists took on the restoration project with some difficulty as they only had black and white photographs to guide them.
At the center of the mural is the Freedom Compass that symbolizes the journeys many have taken across the ages to freedom in a promised land.
Our Capitolio™ brand celebrates the relationship between Miami and old Havana. After designing a series of collections based on iconic monuments in Havana we realized the next step would be to bring the symbolism and mystique of the Freedom Tower to life.
The New World Mural itself is very inspiring as it makes us realize how small the world is and that better days are always coming, it is a fascinating landmark that does not get the recognition it deserves.
To capture the spirit of the mural we went straight to the Freedom Compass in the heart of the mural and our team accomplished this perfectly with a series of contemporary designs.
Here we will show you the first pieces of the Freedom Tower Collection. We are tremendously proud of the collection and will be launching it in the spring of 2021 - we wanted to share them with you. The collection combines rose and yellow gold with diamonds. You can see the first pieces by clicking here or on any of the pictures below.
